Default Google Map for Users

This seems like it would be pretty simple, since you already use it for the clubs mod.

But a members map would be great.. there are a few out there, but most are very lame. :)
Either by IP address, or manually would be fine.

If you guys could do one similar to the clubs mod, I think it would be great.!!

Chili,

Interesting idea. I do have some questions for you.

There are a few products that do this now. On vb.org there is World Map System. While it is for 3.5.x there are reports that it does work in 3.8.x.

Another product I know of is Frapper.

What do these lack that you would like to see us include?

How would users enter location? Pulling from IP is fraught with errors, mobile users and those that travel woul often have false data.

Thanks,

Nathan

I haven't tried the 3.5 version on vB.org, but it certainly looks very primitive. & Frapper always seems to be a big hassle.. I haven't used it in a few years, but as i remember it could defiiteley use some improvement.
Using a Google map is much more user friendly, and looks so much better than Frapper, plus Frapper isn't connected thru the site.. (to a profile) even though it uses IP's you can still fill out the form however you want & no one would really ever know who it is.. from your site.

It could just pull from a "User Profile Field" it may not always be accurate, but it would work flawlessly.

The pin in the map would link to the persons profile (with a pop up like "clubs" including avatar) & give what ever info is asked in the profile field. (or mod menu, like "clubs") I would be using it on a gaming site so it would be great to have gamer ID info. but im sure lots of others would have many other uses for different info.

Actually now that i am thinking about it, you could add LOTS of different options for info into the map location pop up.!!

Off site:
- Gaming ID's (Xbox, PS3, Xfire, Steam, etc)
- Instant Msgr (AIM, YIM, Skype, etc.)
- Personal Website
- Email Address
- Social Network ID's
- Favorite spot (near their location) depending on site theme
- Current activity on Xbox Live (great one for me personally)

On site:
- Link to Profile
- Link to Club
- Link to Social Group

I would like to see this pull info from user profile fields. We collect a lot of info during registration. It would be nice to set what to display and what not to display based on those fields.having the ability to separate based on those fields would be nice also. ie: state.Only admins can see all user details, so limiting this to profile fields makes sense. Here are the fields we collect:
First Name
Last Name
Street Address
Phone Number
City
State
Zip Code
MINI Year
MINI Type
MINI Color

Has the author abandoned development and support of this mod?

The last update to the product was August 2007. The last time the developer was on vb.org was August 2009. Last post in Oct 2007. It was released in August 2006 and has just over 1000 marked installed. Looking over the developers other hacks it seems he stopped updating them in 2007 with 3.6.8. At a quick glance it looks as there are conflicts when using AME. There are reports of successful 3.8.4 installs.

I tried the world map...couldn't get it working properly and had to abandon it due to lack of support / development. I would definitely be interested in this as my club site needs it.
